Atal Setu: Toll Relief for EVs—What It Means for Mumbai
Is Atal Setu about to get cheaper for thousands of commuters—at least the ones driving electric? In a big move for greener mobility, Maharashtra has exempted electric four-wheelers and e-buses from paying toll on Atal Setu, the 21.8-km sea bridge linking South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. The decision kicked in this week and is part of the state’s broader EV push for 2025.
Atal Setu (earlier Mumbai Trans Harbour Link) has already cut travel time drastically for office-goers, port traffic, and airport-bound passengers. But the toll rates were a common complaint. By waiving toll for EVs—covering both state-run and private operators—the government is signalling two things: make clean transport more attractive and keep Mumbai’s traffic moving faster and cleaner across the harbour. Officials clarified that the order applies at the Shivaji Nagar and Gavan toll plazas on the corridor, operationalising an earlier policy decision.
What changes on ground? For EV owners, the daily commute cost drops immediately. For fleet operators and app-based cabs that are going electric, it improves unit economics and could speed up EV adoption in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The policy window is also time-bound, with the latest notification indicating the exemption is in force now, with extensions signalled through the year; watchers will be keen to see if it’s retained beyond 2025 based on uptake and revenue impact. There’s a wider ripple effect too. Similar waivers have been discussed on other key corridors in Maharashtra, pointing to a future where EVs get smoother, cheaper intercity runs. Meanwhile, local civic issues around approach roads—like littering and maintenance near Navi Mumbai—need attention so the overall Atal Setu experience remains premium. For most Mumbaikars, though, the headline is simple: if you drive electric, your harbour cross just got lighter on the wallet, and that could nudge more people to make the switch.
