WWII Hero SSgt. Ralph Bode Identified and Honored in Racine After 80 Years

After 80 years, the remains of World War II hero SSgt. Ralph H. Bode have been identified and returned to Racine, where he will be honored in a special ceremony on the anniversary of his death. Bode, who had been missing since 1944, will finally be laid to rest.

Bode’s story began during the height of World War II when the Washington Park High School graduate enlisted in the Army Air Corps. At just 20 years old, he became a tail gunner aboard a B-24H “Liberator” bomber, flying dangerous missions over Germany.

In September 1944, tragedy struck. During a bombing run over Kassel, Germany, Bode’s aircraft was shot down by enemy fire. As Racine County Veteran Services Officer Shawn Rivers explained, “He was an Army airman who perished in that mission.”

For years, Bode was listed as missing, and a year after the incident, he was officially declared dead. However, his remains were never identified—until now. “His parents passed away without ever knowing his fate,” Rivers said. “It’s incredibly meaningful for our community to finally bring Ralph home.”

Thanks to the efforts of the defense department, Bode’s remains have been positively identified. Now, surviving relatives, including a niece from Door County, along with the Racine community, are preparing for a special burial ceremony scheduled for September 27, 2024, on the 80th anniversary of his passing.
