Understanding Week Numbering Standards
Calendar week numbers are computed differently based on region. Under the ISO 8601 standard, a week is defined to begin on Monday, and the first week of the year is the one containing the first Thursday of January. Under standard US calendar setups, the week begins on Sunday, and Week 1 starts on January 1st regardless of weekday name.
How Leap Years are Determined
A leap year occurs once every four years to adjust for the earth's orbit taking roughly 365.24 days around the sun. In the Gregorian calendar:
- The year must be divisible by 4.
- If it is divisible by 100, it must also be divisible by 400.
- For example, the year 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 and 2100 are not.
