USDA Commits $152 Million to Empower Rural Iowa

Des Moines, August 2025 – In a landmark announcement at the Iowa State Fair on August 9, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins unveiled a $152 million investment aimed at revitalizing rural communities across Iowa. This substantial funding will support 19 projects spanning 20 counties, addressing critical infrastructure needs and fostering economic growth.

Among the key initiatives, a $37 million loan has been allocated to Guthrie County Hospital to support expansion and renovations—including a new behavioral health wing and upgrades to medical technology and equipment. In addition, 13 municipalities will receive funding for essential water and wastewater infrastructure improvements. Transportation and street enhancements, along with loans tailored to spur rural business development and job creation, are also part of the package.

Secretary Rollins highlighted the broader significance of the initiative, noting, “Whether it’s better hospitals, healthcare, childcare, or services in rural America… this administration has invested in rural America like no other.” Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds echoed this sentiment, praising the move during a period of uncertainty in the agricultural economy and expressing optimism that these investments will yield lasting prosperity for rural communities.

As part of the announcement, Rollins also put forward Glen R. Smith—an Iowa farmer and alumnus of Iowa State University who previously served on the Farm Credit Administration board—as a nominee for USDA Under Secretary for Rural Development, signaling a continued focus on leadership grounded in rural experience.
